How laminate and solid wood floors compare

Although wood flooring is now very popular for use in homes as well as businesses, the recession has caused many people to think twice about spending a lot of money on solid wood. Instead, they are opting for laminated flooring, in which the surface looks like solid wood, but the substrate is no more than wood chippings bonded together. Solid wood flooring is of course stronger and is more durable.

With real wood flooring you can have a variety of finishes. There is usually a choice of having the wood lacquered, or hand scraped or brushed and oiled. For all of these surfaces, you can repair the wood easily. Kits that provide all you need to make a repair to minor damage are available from retailers. Among the wood flooring you can get are oak parquet flooring and natural walnut. If the damage is really serious, a new board can be installed. However, that is not an easy do-it-yourself job.

With a laminated floor you don’t have the same choice. You get a pre-finished product and it looks like it. These panels don’t look too bad when new, but if they get damaged, or are subject to a lot of wear from children’s shoes and games, they can be very difficult to repair. Th reason is that part of the laminated top layer will break off, leaving an unsightly hole, showing the chippings below. You then have to change the whole board.

Therefore, although laminates are cheap to buy they are not necessarily cheap in the long run. This is why it is best to buy good quality solid wool flooring for your home.
